If you have never had berries on your holly tree it is probably a male. Some plants are dioecious with individuals that are male or female. Other plants, for example roses, are monoecious with both male and female structures on a single plant. My botany professor said this was a big concern to landscapers because mature female, for example redbuds, would liter would after blooming liter the ground with seed pods.
